Mylar Tinsel
Mylar tinsel is a synthetic material made from polyester film or plastic sheeting. Unlike metallic tinsels, Mylar can stretch when pulled on and is a little less durable, but what you lose in durability you gain in variety. The advantage of using Mylar is the endless array of different sizes and colors, and most Mylar tinsels are double-sided, meaning you get two different tinsels on one spool. My tying bench is stocked with all the tinsels I sell and you will find a little Mylar on a number of my personal favorites. Dec Hogan’s Skagit Mist was one of the flies that inspired me into the use of colored tinsels and broke me from tradition. Mylar tinsels give a pop to a fly you just don’t get with the metallics.
